Here’s how cold weather affects your brain

We don’t have to tell anyone it’s cold: every person who takes even one step out the door feels it. What is still interesting to know is what effect the cold actually has your brain has.

Your brain is very well protected from the outside world, even in extremely cold temperatures. Your brain is locked away in an “isolated vault” with its own heating system. In addition to the insulation of the skull, there are other substances that keep the brain warm. The brain is well protected this way and maintains the perfect temperature.

The question of whether cold temperatures can affect brain activity and performance has been debated. For example, one study found that women performed better in warmer temperatures, while men performed better in cooler temperatures. However, comfort could play a big role in your productivity. Being in an environment where you feel comfortable can lead to increased productivity. While discomfort of any kind can actually sap your performance.

Unfortunately, the same study was unable to demonstrate whether seasonal changes actually affect brain activity.

You probably already knew that cold weather can change your mood, but in some people, it can lead to seasonal affective disorder. Nearly a quarter of the population experiences an increase in depression during the cold, darker months. The disorder is associated with reduced exposure to natural light, sleep disturbances and low vitamin D levels. This is because the days are “shorter” in winter.

If you dread a winter dip, make sure you go outside more often when it’s still light.
