2022 becomes 2023 and this is celebrated on New Year’s Eve. Whether it’s a big party, a classical concert or watching the fireworks with a blanket and prosecco, Munich has something for everyone.

Munich – The changeover to the new year 2023 on New Year’s Eve is celebrated in various ways in Munich. But all holidays have one thing in common: they say goodbye to the old year 2022 and welcome the new year 2023 finally unrestricted again. However, the wide range of events means that Munich residents are spoiled for choice.

Fireworks in the sky over Monaco

Of course, there are great vantage points for all fireworks enthusiasts. From these, the New Year’s sky can be observed without getting involved. The Theresienwiese, especially a place at the Bavaria statue, offers a comprehensive view of the Munich city area. If it’s still too low for you, you can try your luck on the Olympiaberg. Alternatively, the Monopteros in the English Garden offers a good view of the lighting effects of the many flares and fountains that will illuminate Munich’s night sky. Or you can visit the Gerner Bridge over the Nymphenburg Canal and welcome in the New Year with local residents.

The best way to start the new year: a big party

Anyone who gets involved in the party just before the New Year is on the Tollwood’s New Year’s Eve party In good hands. DJs and live bands ensure the right atmosphere. And punctually at midnight the traditional midnight waltz begins. If you prefer something exclusive, you can go to The island of chatter celebrate new year. Tickets are expensive, but guests get an all-inclusive program that includes projector screenings and fireworks. Live music, rustic atmosphere and festive delicacies await the guests of the Augustine Keller – but only until 11pm Then the party can go on P1 to clubbing. Dress code: Black tie or smart suit. If your tastes are more towards techno and underground music, check out the Nightclub Blitz, Signalman Thiel or the Red sun Over.

Enjoy the transition in a thoughtful and sensual way

Further away from the hustle and bustle of the celebrations takes place in the Schwabinger Church of the Redeemer a concert of trumpet and organ. Brass player Luca Chiché and church musician Michael Grill show their skills there. In the Frauenkirche Archbishop Reinhard Cardinal Marx delivers the New Year’s sermon and end-of-year prayer and carefully prepares visitors for the transition to 2023 – alternatively, they can be followed live-streamed from home. Under the motto Virtuosité-Spiritualité, the Munich organ professor Michael Hartmann raises the instrument to him in a concert in the Burgersaalkirche euphonic tones – seconded by trumpet and soprano.

New every year: ban on firecrackers in the Mittlerer Ring

Even if the Munich party atmosphere is hard to contain: the district administration department of the state capital has repeatedly banned private fireworks to protect residents in densely populated areas. Inside the central ring, no “firecrackers” – as department spokesman Julien Chauve calls it – can be set off. That includes all the fireworks “all of which are about a loud bang.” Rockets, volcanoes and fountains should still be allowed. Munich is not alone with the limited ban on fireworks, other cities also have similar rules.
