Braunschweig. The German Red Cross complains about a decline in blood supplies during the summer months and calls for donations. There are enough appointments in our region.
Sweating, dehydration, circulatory problems – on hot days many people struggle with health problems. Donating blood is not something that most people think about – but it is so important, especially in summer. According to the German Red Cross (DRK), this is when traffic accidents are more common in holiday traffic, and among motorcyclists and cyclists. And many regular blood donors are on vacation. But what should you look out for if you want to donate blood now?

According to the German Red Cross blood donation service, blood donation is generally safe even in high temperatures. In fact, it is sometimes even more tolerable in the summer because people tend to drink more in the summer. As always with blood donations, however, you should feel comfortable. Anyone who struggles with dizziness or feeling unwell should therefore refrain from donating blood.

The DRK blood donation service has tips for everyone else: Drink more than usual: The daily amount of liquid should be increased to three liters. You don’t just have to drink mineral water. Fruit spritzers or herbal teas are also good options. The DRK blood donation service recommends drinking a lot, especially before donating blood, and spreading the rest over the course of the day.
Eat properly: You should have eaten enough before your blood donation appointment – avoid fatty foods if possible and please not immediately before donating blood. This is because the body needs time to convert food into energy.
Carbohydrate-rich foods provide sufficient energy. Fruits such as pineapple and melon can support fluid intake. Also good: salty snacks such as nuts give the body back the salt that is lost through sweating. Protect your circulation: After donating blood, you should avoid exercise and take it easy. It is also important to avoid the blazing sun. It is therefore best to cover your head or stay in the shade.
