A finger. It was the only thing Tonje Brenna could use against the blood that flowed out. The girl she had dragged to the hiding place by the water’s edge on Utøya had a hole in her shoulder. Inside: the kind of damage expandable ammunition often creates. Brenna pressed his fingertip into the wound.
It stopped the blood, so AUF’s 23-year-old secretary general left it there.
She left it there when she heard young people screaming as they fell from the slope above her and landed on the sharp rocks nearby.
She left it there while staring at an injured boy a few meters away, “something from inside the head is on its way out through the hole where the eye once was.”
She left it there while she considered swimming, but came to the conclusion that the country was occupied, and that she would surely be killed if she managed to get ashore.
She kept it there until help came in a boat and the young girl was to be rescued on board. Then she carefully removed her finger from the bullet hole.
But there was much more hell on earth again.
