A 54-year-old man, homeless, unemployed, was taken in by the emergency services, lifeless, in the street. He stayed in the hospital while he was receiving treatment. The man suffers from diabetes and heart problems. He had to be amputated from his toes. He still moves on crutches. During his convalescence, he was accommodated in one of the five health care stop beds run by the Athens association in Thionville. This resident needs to be supported in taking medication and managing his addictions. Therapeutic education is as important as recovery.
The system welcomes women as well as men, nationals of the European Union and beyond. Here the health and social support of the most precarious knows no borders.

Doctor specializing in addictology
These health care stop beds have been available since January 2017 in Thionville, they are intended for people on the street or in great difficulty. At the time, the arguments and the concrete case of the Athens association had been retained. “We put a lot of energy into it,” remembers the director, just retired, Didier Gaspard.
There are about twenty places of this type in Moselle. “The medical world is our main prescriber, but requests can come from other social structures”, explains Aurélien Targa, coordinator of the center in Thionville. Each file is submitted to a commission.
The stays last two months, renewable if necessary. A general practitioner, specialized in addictology, consults one morning per week. He is supported by a nurse and a medico-psychological assistant, each part-time.

Global support
Beyond paramedical acts (dressings, toilets, etc.), the Athens association brings its expertise. A social worker manages the administrative files of the beneficiaries (housing applications, opening of rights to social security, minimums, etc.). “The objective is always to strive for a return to autonomy. The care is comprehensive, ”recalls Aurélien Targa, coordinator of the structure. This can go as far as furnishing an apartment. “But we can not force people to get better if they do not want to”, qualifies the professional.

The social support provided by the health care stop bed system justifies its affiliation with the premises of the accommodation and reintegration center (CHRS), rue des Ecluses, in Thionville. A gateway is possible between the two services. The structure is called The Lighthouse, the one to turn to when the compass goes off the rails.
