The theme of the next “Costume Institute” gala hosted by the Metropolitan Museum (the Met Gala, for those in the know) is known.
The rich and famous “pipeules” will meet on May 5, 2025 on the red carpet, dressed in their finest attire, on the theme of the history of fashion across black diasporas. In English:
«Superfine: Tailoring Black Style»
As deciphered for us French Voguethe Met will focus on the figure of the black dandyand will examine “the importance of clothing and style in the formation of black identities within the diaspora.”
It’s the first Met focused on menswear since 2003’s “Men in Skirt.”

The collection draws on the research of guest curator Monica Miller. She is professor and chair of “Africana Studies” at Barnard College, Columbia University.
Monica Miller wrote a book published in 2009, Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity.

Basically, celebrities will have to study to understand the roots of the word dandyism. According to Vogueit is an “exuberant attention to one’s outfit.”
For Monica Miller, it will be about “dressing intelligently and well” – this is not a given for rich and famouswho sometimes offered us more than questionable performances on the red carpet.

A symbolic theme
As recalled BFM TVthe theme is not insignificant, five years after the birth of the movement’s immense wave of anti-racist protest Black Lives Matter“which has pushed many American cultural institutions to rethink their representation of diversity.”
The exhibition will explore the border between visibility and invisibility of African-American culture, and gives pride of place to the diversity of History, resilience, as well as the elimination of prejudices.
Monica Miller explains:
“The history of black dandyism presented in the exhibition thus illustrates the way in which blacks went from the status of slaves and luxury objects, acquired like any other sign of wealth and status, to that of “empowered individuals who dress themselves and are global trendsetters.”

The concept of dandyism allows for full creative freedom, since it is largely based on a tendency toward dissonance and theatricality.
