The 2025 Met Gala is already shaping up to be one of the most anticipated events of the year. Under the theme “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” the evening will highlight the elegance and history of black dandyism.
The first Monday in May is, like every year, synonymous with fashion and glamor in New York. THE Met Gala 2025, organized by the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Anna Wintour, promises a memorable edition with a new theme: “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style”. This new Costume Institute exhibition pays homage to the sartorial history of the black dandy, and will be hosted by a team of prestigious co-chairs. Here’s everything you need to know about the event of the year.
Announced on October 9, 2024, the theme of the 2025 Met Gala is inspired by the book “Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity” by Monica L. Miller, published in 2009. The exhibition “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style” will explore black dandyism across the centuries, from the 18th century to the present. Clothing, works of art, photographs and films will illustrate the indelible impact of this style on contemporary fashion. According to the Met, black dandyism, initially imposed on slaves, was reappropriated and transformed into a symbol of resistance and affirmation of identity. The exhibition will open its doors to the public on May 10, 2025 and will run until October 26.
