NEW JERSEY – The city of Jersey City in New Jersey offers free healthy meals for those under 18 years of age during the summer, both breakfast and lunch, thanks to the Summer Food Service Program (HHS), announced Mayor Steven M. Fulop and the city’s Department of Health and Human Services.
The program seeks to ensure that there are no gaps in access to healthy foods during the summer months when school is out of session. This program is funded by the federal government and administered by the city’s HHS to provide breakfast and lunch for children and teens in low-income areas from June 28 to August 27.
The city is poised to meet increased demand compared to previous years with a total of 225,000 meals to serve over the 8-week program.
“It is vitally important that we continue to support Jersey City families in need of food assistance, especially in our underserved communities,” said Mayor Fulop. “This year we anticipate an even greater need as the pandemic has created difficult circumstances for many of our residents. I encourage anyone in need to take advantage of these free meals. No registration required”.
The Summer Food Service Program is a federal program of the United States Food and Nutrition Services and the Department of Agriculture (USDA).
Children and / or their parents can pick up packed breakfast and lunch and minors do not need to be present to pick up meals. People who show up must bring a student ID or report card, if the child is not present. The process is free and does not require registration.
Anyone wishing to receive food can visit one of 52 sites with locations throughout the city, including schools, parks, community centers, health clinics, and other certified and safe sites. To find a nearby food site you can visit this website or review the USDA map here.
