Originally “Samaritan” was supposed to come to the cinema. Stallone fans without an Amazon Prime Video account should first look into the tube. Amazon acquired MGM, which produced Samaritan, in March this year.
“Samaritan”: That’s what Stallone’s superhero film is about
“It’s about time this superhero came out of retirement,” reads Amazon’s description. “Samaritan” tells the story of 13-year-old Sam Cleary (Javon Walton, 15). The boy wants to get to the bottom of his old neighbor Joe Smith’s secret. And indeed: He turns out to be a former superhero Samaritan, who was presumed dead, but who has long since retired.
Samaritan is Sylvester Stallone’s first starring role in a superhero film. In “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” he only played the small supporting role of Stakar Ogord. He will return in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (March 2023). Stallone lent his voice to the shark-man Nanaue in “The Suicide Squad”.
However, his first major appearance as a superhero is said to differ from the comic book adaptations mentioned. It should be more of a dark superhero drama than a spectacle. Stallone himself describes the project on Instagram as “something very different, something very special and something very EXCITING!!!!”
The shooting of “Samaritan” already took place in 2020, interrupted by a longer Corona break. Because of the pandemic, a theatrical release was postponed several times.
