The 27 countries of the European Union (EU) and MEPs decided this Tuesday, June 7, the imposition of a universal charger for smartphones, tablets, consoles and digital cameras until autumn 2024. In a second phase, it will cover personal computers , announced the European Parliament.
This regulation, which will impose a USB-C port on all small and medium-sized electronic devices, aims to limit environmentally harmful waste and defend the rights of consumers, who are obliged to accumulate incompatible chargers for their different devices.
American giant Apple, which defends its Lightning charging technology, was strongly opposed but was defeated.
“By autumn 2024, USB Type-C will be the universal charging port for all mobile phones, tablets and cameras in the EU,” said PEuropean Parliament in a statement.
For personal computers, there is a period of 40 months for adaptation after the entry into force of the new EU legislation.
After the summer break, the EU Parliament and Council will have to formally approve the agreement before it is published in the Official Journal of the EU.
The agreement will enter into force 20 days after its publication and its provisions will start to apply after 24 months, in autumn 2024.
The new rules will not apply to products placed on the market before the date of application.
