Here Bråthen misses the police – VG

While the police officers are waiting for support, Espen Andersen Bråthen manages to get out of the Coop store and away from the police. During the next half hour, he kills five people.

VG has gained access to a video showing crucial seconds of the dramatic police action in Kongsberg center on Wednesday night.

The 19-second film clip shows the two police officers who were first on the scene standing at the entrance to the Coop store. It looks like one is talking on the phone.

Four minutes earlier, they had made contact with Espen Andersen Bråthen (38) for the first time. They have chosen to retire after staying shot at twice with bow and arrow inside the shop.

They have the protective equipment left in the car to go straight into action. They are armed, but will not be in a position to fire shots themselves.

Seconds later, the video shows a third police officer in full protective gear coming from the right. He walks towards the entrance.

Around this time, the police lose sight of Bråthen. It has police chief Ole Bredrup Sæverud previously confirmed to VG:

– There will be a patrol with one service person who brings a vest and protective equipment that allows us to get closer. When it’s in place, he will get away, he said this weekend.

The video was filmed at 18.22, ten minutes after the police received the first message – and four minutes after their first contact with Bråthen inside the Coop store – see timeline here:

The exact time when Bråthen escapes from one of the exits from the Coop store is not certain. But according to witness descriptions and telephone logs VG has access to, it is in the period 18.19–18.23.

From the time the perpetrator escaped from the police until he was arrested, it took just under half an hour.

During this time, he moved freely in several streets in Kongsberg center, and while the police hunt him down with great resources, five people are killed with stabbing weapons, among other things by entering homes.

The seas: These five were killed

VG has asked police inspector Per Thomas Omholt a number of questions about the police action at the Coop store. He says that it is not possible to comment on individual parts of the police’s efforts that evening now.

– The fact about the actual police action has not been clarified from the investigation team, so we will not say anything about that yet. Our goal is to get the exact times for the various patrols and incidents, and that will be part of the investigation.

He also says that they are beginning to form a good picture of what happened inside the store.

– We are starting to get a good overview, because there is a lot of video surveillance. We are also beginning to get an overview of the outside of the building, says Omholt.

In questioning with the police, Bråthen has admitted that he is behind the killings, but has not taken a position on the question of criminal guilt. Police have several hypotheses about what may be Bråthen’s motive for the actions, but said earlier this week that the hypothesis of disease is most strengthened.
