Coins have a very low face value compared to banknotes, but the Coins with minting errors can truly amaze; if you find the right one. Some of these in fact represent a small fortune, not even comparable to the value they have when they are normally spent.
For this reason, it is always worthwhile, from time to time, to take a closer look at the coins we have in our wallet. Who knows: we could find that odd penny to resell for a few thousand euros. Can’t you spot them? Here’s what you need to look for.
Minting error: 6 thousand euro cents
Let’s start with the smallest coin, both in terms of size and value: 1 euro cent. In 2002 in Italy a certain number of coins with minting errors were printed, which today have a certain value. On these little coins from 1 cent appears the Mole Antonelliana, which is actually the monument depicted on the 2 cents one. The 1 cent coin shows Castel del Monte di Andria.
The technicians of the Mint noticed the mistake and destroyed many coins, but by now some were in circulation. And today they are rare and precious for collectors.
How much can they be worth? It depends on how they are stored. The more they are in good condition, that is to say they are close to what is called “brilliant uncirculated”, the more they have value. The media, between 2 thousand and 3 thousand euros; but be careful, qSome were also bought for 6 thousand euros; 600 thousand times more than its face value.
When a coin is worth tens of thousands of euros
But you can have even more surprises, the ones that change your life. Leaving aside the 1 cent coins, in this case let’s focus on the 1 euro one. We are already talking about coins that have a more defined value, used daily for payments; in short, no one would leave 1 euro coins at the bottom of a bag without worrying about it.
But even in this case, some mismatched coins made a great gift to their owners. The specimen ended up at auction on the well-known eBay ecommerce site at a price that leaves you amazed: 40 thousand euros.
It is not an exchange of images, but the absence of some details, which make the minting error really evident. On this 1 euro coin the mark of the State Mint of Rome, represented by a capital R, was missing. The date on which the minting took place is also absent; and also the knurling is different from its innumerable “sisters”.
It appears to be a one-of-a-kind piece, so there isn’t much to look for in your piggy bank. But take a look anyway: if you find coins that are different from the others, maybe you will do a bargain with some numismatics enthusiasts.
