G à R: The Queen’s Gambit (Netflix), Black Bottom de Ma Rainey (Netflix), Minari (A24) et Ratched (Netflix) Graphique: The AV Club
We have to admit, it’s just a little disorienting to start discussing the nominees for the 2021 Golden Globes, which are usually a staple in early January. There really isn’t much that COVID-19 hasn’t mixed up at this point. What stays consistent, thankfully, is the constant stream of decent movies and TVs. Sarah Jessica Parker and Taraji P. Henson have taken on the task of quickly announcing this year’s nominees on behalf of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association and, like most years, the list of potential statuette recipients in 2021 includes some expected favorites. (One Night In Miami…! Nomadland!), A few puzzling additions (like HFPA’s inexplicable love for Emily In Paris and James Corden in The Prom), and at least one glaring omission (like this truly phenomenal HBO series called I May Destroy You, in case you haven’t heard about it).
Netflix leads the pack in television and film for another year with The Crown and Mank as pioneers in their respective industries. (Both scored six nominations per play.) The Trial Of The Chicago 7 followed with five nominations, including a supporting actor for Sacha Baron Cohen. The comedic side of also showed his love for Cohen and his efforts in Amazon Prime’s Borat Subsequent Moviefilm. As expected, the Golden Globes mark the start of what will likely represent a sturdy, posthumous awards season love for the late Chadwick Boseman, who died ahead of the premiere of Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. Love for Regina King’s feature debut as a director for the beloved One Night In Miami was also expected. Speaking of directors: For the first time in the history of the series, three women in the uniquely masculine category – King, Chloe Zhao (Nomadland) and Emerald Fennell (Promising Young Woman). It is a step forward. If only we could say the same about the HFPA approach of Minari, the American film by Lee Isaac Chung about a clearly American experience that was sequestered in the Foreign Languages category, disqualifying it from the competition in the other major categories. AV Club editor-in-chief Danette Chavez and editor-in-chief Katie Rife will dig into this year’s surprises and snobs later today.
For the first time, the Golden Globes are going bicoastal this year as returning duo Tina Fey and Amy Poehler virtually host from opposite sides of the country. After being pushed back nearly two months from its regular January schedule, the ceremony will air live Sunday, February 28 at 5 p.m. PT / 8 p.m. ET on NBC. See the list of nominees below.
