here are the models most at risk

Car thefta phenomenon concentrated above all in the Center-South but which is constantly increasing in Lombardy. Among the Northern Regions, in fact, Lombardy boasts the sad record of stolen cars (8,024 cars stolen in 2021) and follows Campania (20,499), Lazio (13,050), Puglia (12,850) and Sicily (9,194).

Car theft, data from 2021

This is what emerges from the Viasat research on car thefts in the year 2021. The news is not comforting, especially as regards what happens after the thefts: among those reported, in Italy only 28 thousand stolen cars were recovered (37.59 % of the total). In total, 75,471 cars, off-road vehicles and vans were stolen in Italy in 2021. A figure that, compared to 2020, increases by 0.63%.

Car thefts, the most coveted models

Among the cars most at risk of theft we find the Fiat Panda, the Fiat 500, the Fiat Punto, the Lancia Ypsilon, the Smart and the Volkswagen Golf. All small cars or medium-sized cars, which are generally stolen to commit robberies or to resell spare parts thanks to the demand on the market due to the wide diffusion of these models.
High-end cars and SUVs (in 2021, out of 1,273 stolen vehicles only 34% were found) generally disappear on commission and mostly end up abroad. The markets where only the Middle East, Serbia, Bulgaria, Romania and, until shortly before the war in Ukraine, also Russia are most in demand.

Car thefts, increasingly hi-tech thieves

Faced with the slight but constant increase in car theft, the increased technology of anti-theft systems does not seem to be enough. This is because even thieves are becoming more and more hi-tech, specializing in certain vehicle models whose alarms they know well: it takes a few seconds to steal a car and, in some cases, even to deactivate all technology, including satellite alarms.
