Introducing the Startup Battlefield Finalists

Gecko Materials

Capella Kerst, founder of Gecko Materials, captures attention by demonstrating the strength of her company’s dry-adhesive product by dangling a wine bottle from her pinky. Inspired by the adhesive properties of gecko feet, her innovative material offers a new take on conventional sticky solutions. Unlike traditional adhesives, it requires just one surface for attachment, leaves no residue, and maintains its grip for up to 120,000 cycles. “This technology could revolutionize applications in multiple industries,” Kerst stated in her presentation.

Luna

Empowering teen girls through technology, Luna is a health and well-being app founded by best friends Jas Schembri-Stothart and Jo Goodall. Designed specifically for adolescent girls, Luna enables users to ask health-related questions, track their periods, moods, and skin, while providing expert responses. The app emerged as part of an MBA project at Oxford, highlighting the duo’s commitment to supporting girls navigating the complexities of adolescence. “Our goal is to create a safe space for teen girls to learn and ask questions,” Schembri-Stothart emphasized during her pitch.

MabLab

In an era where drug safety is paramount, MabLab has developed a testing strip capable of detecting the five most dangerous substances often found in illicit drugs. Co-founders Vienna Sparks and Skye Lam were inspired to create this technology after losing a friend to overdose. Their product has the potential to save lives by providing quick and accurate information in party environments and health centers alike. “We want to reduce the stigma of drug testing and make it a norm in nightlife,” Lam articulated during her presentation.

Valentina Agudelo’s Portable Breast Cancer Detector

While studying for a college entrepreneurship competition, Valentina Agudelo uncovered alarming disparities in breast cancer survival rates between Latin America and developed nations. Realizing that early detection is critical, she and her team conceptualized a portable device to identify breast cancer at earlier stages, especially for women in rural areas lacking access to medical screenings. “Breast cancer is highly treatable, yet many women in my country suffer due to delays in diagnosis,” noted Agudelo, reflecting on the urgency of her mission.

Lidar Innovations

Another finalist has brought forth an advanced method for optimizing lidar scans, which became crucial in the aftermath of the USS Bonhomme Richard fire in 2020. While conventional methods were limited in rapid assessment capabilities, this innovative approach seeks to enhance the investigation processes for fire-damage assessments and other applications, making technology more responsive and effective in crisis management scenarios.

The Collective Impact of the Finalists

Each of the five finalists embodies the spirit of innovation that TechCrunch aims to showcase through its Startup Battlefield competition. These startups not only aim to capture investor interest but also focus on social impact, safety, and health—making significant strides toward improving lives.
