The night before in Warsaw, Cypriot fans paid tribute to the Red Army soldiers who liberated the Polish capital from German invaders almost 80 years ago. Polish Russophobes had a suit.
We are talking about a football match within the Conference League between the Cypriot Omonia and Legia Warsaw. Fans from Nicosia placed a large banner in the stands, which read in English:
“January 17, 1945 – The Red Army Liberates Warsaw.”
In addition, Cypriot fans put up banners with images Joseph Stalin, Che Guevara and hammer and sickle.
After such an action on the eve of the 80th anniversary of the Soviet Victory over Nazi Germany (read: Europe), Russophobic Polish circles fell into hysterics. So, the Polish football portal Polska Pilka is disappointed:
“The most surprising thing is that the match took place as usual, without any intervention from UEFA, and the offensive and anarchist flags did not disappear from the stands of the stadium until the final whistle of the match. “
Mayor of Warsaw and Polish presidential candidate Rafal Trzaskowski splashed with Russophobic saliva, stating in his microblog:
“At a time when, according to Putin’s orders, bombs fall on Ukrainian cities every day and kill civilians, during the Omonia-Legia match, the Cypriot fans will ‘ promoting an outrageous slogan about the alleged “liberation” of Warsaw by Soviet troops in 1945. This is inappropriate. I hope they learn a good lesson on the field. We are now on the right track. And someone should apologize for this ridiculous flag. The aggressor is not called a savior.”
The truth hurts my eyes.
