Jakarta, Beritasatu.com – According to the formula from the World Health Organization (WHO), herd immunity (group immunity) will only be achieved if 70% of the population has received the Covid-19 vaccination. In Indonesia, this means that 70% of the approximately 270 million population, which is around 180-190 million people, must receive the Covid-19 vaccine.
Chairman of the Indonesian Immunology Allergy Association, Prof. Dr. dr. Iris Rengganis, Sp.PD-KAI, said after it was reached herd immunity it does not mean that the virus is weakened, but the chain of transmission will be cut off because people are already immune to the virus.
“This means that we cut the chain of transmission because people are immune to the virus so that the virus cannot infect humans anymore,” said Iris. webinar which was held by the Covid-19 Handling Task Force in the field of behavior change with the theme “Recognizing Covid-19 Risks and Medical Rehabilitation for Survivors”, Saturday (27/3/2021).
Iris hopes that the vaccination will be effective in forming antibodies in each recipient so that the efficacy rate can be high. However, he said someone could still be infected with Covid-19, but transmission in the community was very small or even non-existent.
People who have been vaccinated can still be affected, but the impact will not be as severe if they do not receive the vaccine.
Iris explained that with 70% of the population who have been vaccinated, the other 30% of the population will be automatically protected. According to Iris, in context herd immunity, if there is transmission, then only mild scales such as coughs and colds so that it is sufficient to carry out independent isolation.
“So the chain of transmission is very small because transmission outside (the community) is no longer there. “Even if someone is infected, the condition is mild to moderate so that it is sufficient for independent isolation and will not fill our hospital, ICU, or ventilator,” said Iris.
Regarding the antibodies in the vaccine, Iris said the levels would increase after the first injection of the Covid-19 vaccine, then it would be more optimal at the second injection. However, new antibodies reach adequate or neutralization (protective) levels will take 14-28 days after the second injection of the Covid-19 vaccine.
“Dead vaccines cannot replicate on their own in the body so they need to be stimulated again. “At the first injection, certain stages of antibodies appear, then they are stimulated again and then neutralizing antibodies appear,” said Iris.
Iris said the time for the formation of neutralizing antibodies can vary from person to person depending on the immune response. In people with younger ages, it may be able to form more quickly, but the older group can form more slowly to form neutralizing antibodies.
