Harvesting mussels and oysters in the Thau lagoon in the Hérault (© (CDT34))
Taking into account the results published today of research for toxins carried out within the framework of the Rephytox network on mussels and oysters from zone “34.39” of the Thau lagoon, near Sète, the prefect of Hérault today decided the suspension of recreational and professional fishing, collection, transport, purification, shipping, distribution and marketing for human consumption of all shellfish in the areas of the Thau pond, except oysters which did not show contamination.
Map of prohibitions
Oysters from the Thau lagoon and other types of shellfish harvested before May 10 are not subject to this restriction measure. This temporary measure will be lifted as soon as the health security conditions are met for reopening the production areas.
The updated map of sanitary shell harvesting bans can be found on the OIEAU website: http://www.atlas-sanitaire-coquillages.fr/statuts or on the QualitéCoq smartphone application.
► Recommendations:
People who have consumed shellfish from these areas and who have digestive disorders (vomiting, diarrhea, nausea, etc.) and / or neurological symptoms (persistent headaches, disorientation and confusion) are invited to contact their doctor. It is recalled that cooking does not destroy the toxins provided by phytoplankton (microscopic plants). Even after cooking, the shellfish remain unfit for consumption. Those in possession of these products are asked not to consume them and to return them to the point of sale.
