While more and more clubs in professional football are replacing artificial grass with natural grass, Heracles Almelo does not yet want to know about districts. The club from Overijssel announced on Wednesday that the top layer of the current synthetic turf field in Erve Asito will be replaced.
“As of the 2020/2021 season, we will be playing on a new synthetic turf pitch,” says general manager Rob Toussaint on the Heracles website. “We have been making rational decisions in our emotional world for years.”
“This choice offers us various sporting, financial and organizational advantages with which we can also achieve optimal training and competition facilities for team and staff in these difficult times.”
Heracles was the first professional football club to play on artificial grass in 2003. Several clubs followed the example of the Almeloërs, but in recent years more and more associations have opted for natural grass.
This summer, PEC Zwolle, ADO Den Haag and VVV-Venlo are exchanging artificial grass for natural grass. In addition to Heracles, only Sparta Rotterdam and FC Emmen play on artificial grass in the Eredivisie.
Work will start in Erve Asito on July 21. Heracles expects the new field to be ready for play on August 1.
