HER had performed during the Super Bowl in 2021.
In 1992, the Walt Disney cartoon “Beauty and the Beast” was the first animated film to be nominated for an Oscar. It won two statuettes: Best Original Score and Best Original Song. Thirty years later, ABC television is planning a two-hour special entitled “Beauty and the Beast: A 30th Celebration”. The chain announced, this Wednesday, July 20, that the singer HER will play the role of Belle. She thus joins Jon M. Chu, the executive producer, and Hamish Hamilton, the director. The rest of the cast will be announced soon.

The singer, real name Gabriella Wilson, reacted in “Variety“I can’t believe I’m going to be able to be part of the ‘Beauty and the Beast’ legacy. The world will see a Black and Filipino Beauty! I’ve always wanted to be a Disney princess, and I’m lucky enough to work with two wonderful directors, Hamish Hamilton and my favorite, Jon M. Chu. It’s truly surreal and I couldn’t be more grateful.”

For his part, Jon M. Chu said he was delighted with this collaboration. “With her obvious extraordinary talent and stage presence, HER is the perfect embodiment of our Belle and we are thrilled that the public can see her in this celebration of creativity,” he said, before adding: “We were both influenced as storytellers by the original animated film, so it’s very exciting to collaborate together to honor the artistry of this timeless classic, while inspiring a whole new generation of creators.”

This anniversary program was imagined in a hybrid format. In addition to a screening of the film, it will contain new musical performances and new sets and costumes inspired by the original story. The show premieres Dec. 25, on ABC, and will be available to stream on Disney+ afterward.
