Henrik Lundqvist: “Early Elite Investment for 12-13 Year Olds in Swedish Hockey”

Early elite investment has been a hotly debated topic in Sweden.

Henrik Lundqvist, 41, has his picture ready.

– I think it’s time to invest a little already at the age of 12-13, he says in TV6.

Before tonight’s JVM match between the Junior crowns and Canada, Henrik Lundqvist stepped out onto the ice and received the crowd’s applause after being inducted into Swedish ice hockey’s Hall of Fame.

A moment later, the legend stepped into TV6’s studio and gave his view of Swedish hockey and how it stands internationally right now.

“Time to bet”

And he had a clear opinion.

Namely that competition is important.

– I like that there are more nations that are getting better, that it is not as easy to beat, for example, Germany. We will have to work in every game, it is a good sign that hockey is growing. We’re in a good place now, but you shouldn’t get comfortable. We must continue to “push” and with the right attitude … already for 12-13-year-olds, that it is time to invest a little, I think, not to be so kind all the time, he said.

“May have claims”

He went on to say:

– I think you can have demands on 12, 13 and 14-year-olds when it comes to training and discipline and competing on the ice. Because it’s about competition. In the end, it is what will determine the quarter-finals, semi-finals and finals. That you grow up with this mentality, to win is important. We won’t apologize for that.

“Driven me the most”

In the break between the second and third period, Sportbladet asked Henrik Lundqvist to develop his reasoning.

– If I have to point to one thing that has driven me the most, it is the importance of trying to win. Then everyone is different. But for me it was incredibly important, both when I was training and playing matches. That’s what “pushed” me, this competitive bit, trying to find it in every training session. It meant an incredible amount when you went out to the match.

Are you afraid we’re about to lose it a bit?

– I just don’t want it to be taken away from people who love to compete. That’s what I was pointing out, that we must not be for please either. We have to be able to push a little.
