Henri Bontenbal is nominated as the new leader of the CDA for the upcoming elections in November. He thus succeeds Wopke Hoekstra.
Sources from The Hague confirm this RTL News and the NOS. Bontenbal will be presented to the board on Monday. The association council takes a decision that same day.
The forty-year-old Bontenbal studied physics in Leiden. As a Member of Parliament, he takes climate and energy under his wing, among other things.
After the extremely messy list leader elections for the 2021 parliamentary election, the CDA decided to nominate one candidate this time. Bontenbal and CDA MP Derk Boswijk were seen as favourites.
Hoekstra announced in July that he would not be available for the leadership of the CDA. He is also not on the list for the Chamber. “That is not obvious,” he said at the time. Hoekstra feels “more of an administrator than a professional politician”.
That was a repetition of what Hoekstra said three years ago. Then an urgent appeal was made to him to lead the party after Hugo de Jonge had resigned that job. But Hoekstra initially refused.
CDA also saw Huibers and Keijzer leave
On Thursday it became clear that CDA chairman Hans Huibers is resigning. Within the CDA there had been criticism of his performance for some time.
Various media previously reported on the slow process surrounding the appointment of a new party leader for the CDA. Huibers was ultimately responsible in that process.
The party also waved goodbye to former Secretary of State Mona Keijzer last weekend. The CDA prominent announced that she had canceled her membership.
The possible list leader of Nijmegen mayor Hubert Bruls was the last straw for her, reported RTL News. She would have shared her criticism with Huibers, but he would have dismissed her opinion.
