Hendricks strikes 10th win, Cubs beat Arizona 5-1

PHOENIX (AP) – Kyle Hendricks outscored Madison Bumgarner in their pitching game with six effective innings for their 10th straight win, and the Chicago Cubs began the second half of the season with a 5-1 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Friday.

Hendricks (12-4) allowed a run on six hits and struck out four to tie Mexican Dodgers Julio Urías as the winningest pitchers in the majors. He is the first Cubs pitcher to have at least 12 starts without conceding a loss since Jon Lester in 2016.

Pinch hitter Jason Heyward hit a two-run homer. Kris Bryant hit a solo home run and Patrick Wisdom also knocked it out of the park for Chicago.

Bumgarner (4-6) allowed two plate appearances on two hits and fanned six in as many innings on his return from injury. Josh Rojas had two doubles and a RBI for Arizona, which has the worst record in the majors and has lost four of its last five games.

For the Cubs, Venezuelans Willson Contreras 3-0; Rafael Ortega from 1-9. Puerto Rican Javier Báez 4-2, with one scored.

For the Diamondbacks, Venezuelans Eduardo Escobar 4-0; David Peralta 1-0.
