Caraldine Nolan, formerly of WeightWatchers, launched NutraVerse after recognizing a significant market gap following the company’s closure in Ireland. Passionate about wellness and nutrition, she founded Weighless Wonders, offering online and in-person classes. However, Nolan envisioned a more extensive solution—one that utilizes technology to deliver robust nutritional information.

NutraVerse offers users access to over one million food products, employing simple barcode scanning to reveal detailed nutritional insights. Beyond traditional calorie counting, the app features a nutri-score, a color-coded system that rates the nutritional quality of food and beverages, a nova-score reflecting the extent of processing, and an eco-score that evaluates sustainability. This emphasis on granular data equips consumers with essential knowledge to make healthier, more informed food choices.


A Soft Launch with Promising Results

Launched in September, NutraVerse saw immediate engagement, recording more than 500 downloads across 10 European countries. Users can sign up for various subscription plans—including a monthly fee of €5.99 or an annual fee of €50—while a premium weekly subscription at €10, which features live Zoom sessions covering topics like sustainability and food labeling, has attracted a significant number of subscribers.

"People are looking for more than just nutrition facts; they want to understand the impact of their food choices," Nolan explains. "By incorporating these various scores and educational features, we aim to foster a more informed consumer base."


The Development Journey

Nolan’s journey to app development was fueled by her commitment to health education. She self-taught coding to create the initial NutraVerse prototype and later partnered with Maynooth University through an Enterprise Ireland innovation voucher to refine the app further.

With a bootstrap investment of around €40,000—derived from personal funding and support from South Dublin LEO and Enterprise Ireland—Nolan has successfully established a small team of three full-time employees and six subcontractors, all working from their office in Tallaght.

Nolan is currently participating in the AgTechUCD programme, aimed at fast-tracking business development for agtech and agri-food startups. She believes that this program will enhance her leadership skills, enabling her to navigate the next steps for NutraVerse effectively.


The Broader Implications of NutraVerse

The introduction of NutraVerse comes at a critical time when many consumers are increasingly mindful of their dietary choices. Research conducted by the International Agency for Research on Cancer indicates a link between food choices and the outcomes of health issues like obesity and cancer, underscoring the importance of informed eating.

In Nolan’s words, "Ultra-processed foods is a real buzz phrase but not all are bad for you. There is a serious lack of education around this topic, and scaremongering on social media only adds to the confusion."

NutraVerse aims to dismantle this misinformation by equipping users with educational tools and promoting healthier eating habits. The app also plans to implement AI technology to personalize user experiences, adapting to individual dietary preferences and habits.


Looking Ahead

As NutraVerse looks to broaden its reach in the UK, France, and Sweden, Nolan aims to raise €100,000 in funding to expand features and user engagement levels. With the backing of her team and community supporters, she is poised to make a significant impact on nutritional literacy in European markets.
