Helping a Vision-Impaired Elderly Loved One Find Meaning in Life: A Daughter’s Struggle

My mother is a pensioner, 72 years old, she has stopped enjoying life and is depressed.

The fact is that she has progressive myopia and she fears that blindness awaits her in the near future. She does not want to be a burden to anyone, today, she sees a little, and copes with the housework herself.

She cannot get out of this state on her own; she rejects offers to change the environment, take a walk, or go somewhere, and always finds a reason to refuse.

How can I help her find the meaning of life without vision? She won’t go to a psychologist either. But she periodically says out loud the thought that it’s better for me to die.

I suggested that she get a pet, find some kind of hobby besides TV, but there was no progress. Maybe there is some way out?

How does this affect me

First of all, this irritates me and saddens me that she rejects all options for help and doesn’t want anything.

What am I trying to do

Yes, we brought our 4-year-old granddaughter to visit her to lift her spirits, but it helps temporarily, her mood improves, but she gets tired of it.

She rejects options to go somewhere for a change of scenery.
