The authorities of the medical center are calling on the population to come forward and donate blood, with the aim of saving the lives of patients who require blood components. Dr. Ana Lucía Valerín Chaves, head of the Blood Bank, stressed the importance of donation for those who need this vital liquid.
“It is crucial to understand that many patients depend on donated blood to survive. An example are oncohematological patients, who need red blood cells, plasma, platelets and even cryoprecipitates,” said the microbiologist. In addition, Dr. Valerín highlighted that, on average, a blood transfusion is performed every half hour at this medical center, and a single donor can save up to three lives.
Please note that the requirements for donating blood include:
- Be between 18 and 65 years old.
- Enjoy good health.
- Weigh more than 52 kilos and measure at least 150 cm.
- Present a valid identity card, residence card or official identification.
- Not having consumed alcohol in the last 24 hours.
- Stay well hydrated.
- Not having had surgery, gastroscopy, tattoo or piercing in the last six months.
- Women should not be pregnant or breastfeeding.
In order to continue providing this valuable benefit to patients, the Blood Bank invites the population to make donations, either during this activity or in the hospital’s donation room.
This room is open from Monday to Thursday from 7 am to 4 pm and on Fridays from 7 am to 3 pm. Donors heading to the hospital must enter through the south entrance, located next to the Ministry of Health.
