Instead, we received a disaster scenario. Fred had open heart surgery, two heart attacks, Covid and had to recuperate. In the meantime, I had to sign for this house, not aware of all defects.” While Marijke is transferring the house, Fred is in intensive care.
Although their old house was sold for a good amount, the couple had to put all their money into solving the hidden defects of their new home. “There is simply nothing left,” says Marijke. “I had to borrow 25,000 euros from my sister, because we can no longer get a higher mortgage. And I had to use my daughter’s entire savings account for her studies.” And Marijke has saved for this for twenty years. “I think that’s quite bad.”
Then Fred comes home unexpectedly. He is happy that help is coming after all the misery they have had to go through. While the handymen are busy with the bedroom, Fred and Marijke get to work on the living room. Both rooms will not be finished at the end of the job week, but they have come a long way. Fred and Marijke take a look in their bedroom. “This is unbelievable,” says Fred. The bedroom, where there were still dead mice under the floor when the house was purchased, is as good as finished. The job team only tried to create a small toilet room, but it was not completed. The toilet is there and it works. “Wow, great,” says Marijke.
Two weeks later, John comes by to see if Fred and Marijke have finished the living room. “Oh,” he responds when he sees that the living room has received a complete makeover. The couple got help from family to finish it. Fred’s health is completely fine again. And Marijke, who was so tired, has completely recovered. “I now have peace here at once,” she says.
