Help for earthquake victims from Frohnleiten: “There is still a lot to do”

Frohnleiten: A family organized aid transports with donations to the earthquake area.

In the cities of Petrinja and Sisak, around 50 kilometers south of Zagreb, a 6.4 magnitude quake shook the earth on December 29th. The effects could still be felt in the Graz area. While here “only” lamps or Christmas tree balls wobbled, the state of disaster was declared on site. The first relief operations started shortly after the devastating earthquake. One of the first to help was Boro Rastegorac. The native Croat lives with his family in Frohnleiten and has not hesitated to organize private deliveries.

Support people

“It hit people who are already having a hard time. Especially in smaller towns and villages. And mountain villages are hard to reach, roads cannot be used,” says Rastegorac. The conditions in the affected regions, the collapsed houses or people who depend on hot meals from others have reminded him of the civil war 30 years ago: “Images come back in their heads that I don’t want anyone else. There are still a lot to do.” The family called on the Frohnleitner to donate via social media channels. With great success: In just a short time, boxes of essential goods were collected. “I’m overwhelmed. Especially by the youth. They tackled.”

Everyone can help

Help is very important to the Rastegorac ‘. “It doesn’t matter whether the earthquake hit Croatia, Italy or any other country. But because my husband has Croatian roots, we know more precisely how people feel and how things work on the ground,” says his wife Evelin. In order to hand over the previously collected donations, the family has already set out twice. The first time on Epiphany when she witnessed an aftershock up close. “I could now say that it was bad luck. But we were lucky that nothing happened. And when you witness such a catastrophe yourself, you really know how important it is to help other people.”

  • There is still an urgent need for medication, non-perishable food and hygiene articles, washing powder, bandages, disinfectants, multiple plugs and extension cables, kitchen appliances (such as kettles), radiant heaters, monetary donations, animal feed. Info and contact: 0664/1539409
