Help for cinemas in difficult times

Grünberg / Lich (pm). Empty rows of seats in the projection halls, nothing flickers on the screen: Covid-19 hits the cinema industry hard, and small art house cinemas are no exception.

In this situation in particular, the support from the Gießen district’s “Cinema Culture in the Country” award was more important than ever, says Edgar Langer from the “Traumstern” Lich cinema. The economic situation was already difficult before the pandemic, and the consequences of the lockdown are now aggravating. Edith Weber from the »Apollo / Turm« cinema in Grünberg can confirm this.

“Right now, it is important to recognize and promote your work so that you can hopefully start again in better times and be a meeting place for people,” said District Administrator Anita Schneider when the award was presented. The district supports the cinema in Lich with 10,000 euros and the cinema in Grünberg with 5,000 euros.

Prize has been around since 2012

“Cinema can be much more than a film experience,” said Schneider. The two cinemas in Lich and Grünberg are an integral part of the cultural landscape in the district and are known far beyond its borders. They would make a meaningful contribution to the culture of education. The cinema advancement award has existed since 2012. With this, the district wants to support the dissemination of films of artistic or educational value.
