Helosek shines in thrilling victory against Jablonec: A Soccer Baby’s Triumph

“Helosek? He’s such a soccer baby. He likes to play with the ball,” said coach Tomáš Zápotočný. At the changer, he smiled with satisfaction when he saw the artist Hellebrand elegantly embroidering. Not one of the three opponents was able to take the ball away from him, and he crowned the unusual feat with a pass for the winning goal, under which the ready winger Wale Musa Alli signed.

“David Broukal sent me the ball and there were several opponents around me. I tried fiddling the first one, which worked, and I went through the others as well. Alli then finished it off brilliantly,” explained Hellebrand.

Five minutes before the end, he had to leave unexpectedly, Michal Hubínek was given priority instead. “Purely tactical substitution, we needed to strengthen the center in the end,” explained Zápotočný.

Hellebrand, who started until the second half, left the square visibly disappointed. On his way to the bench, he peeled off the tapes from his wrists and threw them onto the grass. When he heard the applause from the stands, he tapped his heart with his palm and clapped. At first, he wanted to go straight to the cabin, but coach Zápotočný stopped him in time and, with a gentle tug on his shoulder, indicated to him to sit among the others.

“I apologize to the coaches. They are great and I trust them,” said Hellebrand about Zápotočný and his partner Marko Nikl. “I was angry, but I got over it on the bench. And thanks to the fans for the applause. They pleased me, even though I didn’t even notice them that much at first because of the annoyance. Anyone who likes football knows well that emotions are part of it.”

Hellebrand was not the only Budejovice hero. We have already mentioned the nimble Alli: in addition to the goal, he scored a penalty from which Jakub Hora equalized at 1:1. The Nigerian player, who arrived from Brno only last week, played on Strelecky Island for the first time, and the Budějovice boiler immediately called out his name with gratitude. “Alli managed it brilliantly,” Zápotočný bowed. “He confidently takes the ball and goes one on one at speed, we have few such players in the Czech Republic. Even when weakened, he caused great problems for the opponent, which is exactly why we brought him in.”

And the two Dynamo underdogs? Goalkeeper Martin Janáček did not keep a solvable cross in his gloves right from the end of the match, and midfielder Miloš Kratochvíl sent Jablonec into the lead. “Another cheap goal that can be broadcast on New Year’s Eve… It bothers me that there were three players from Jablonec around the ball. Where were we? The boys from the six-man zone will get their ears back next week that they didn’t help Janáček,” explained coach Zápotočný.

Even the seasoned forward Zdeněk Ondrášek, who did not finish the game due to two yellow cards, also caught it from the fans. After his dismissal, Dynamo played almost the entire second half by ten, but still managed to score the winning goal. “There’s no reason to blame Kobra for anything, it wasn’t anything malicious,” noted Zápotočný. “And his offensive contribution? He fought, he had a difficult time against Jablonec stoppers. We imagined that by this time he would have more than just one goal, on the other hand he would give 100 percent in every game. He is also a great leader and mentor to young people.”

Dynamo felt a little relieved after the crazy match, thanks to their second win of the season they jumped to fourth place from the end. “We knew that our competitors were going out and that we had it in our hands. I have to smile in front of the boys, they fought it out against Jablonec,” described Zápotočný. “This victory will calm us down before the international break. We will train and I believe we will come back as a completely different team. Perhaps we have already chosen bad luck.”
