The community of players around Helldivers 2 has so far been satisfied, even enthusiastic. However, now the developers from the Arrowhead studio were in for the first cold shower, as they managed to annoy some PC players. Until now, those on Steam had the option of using and linking their PlayStation Network account, if they already have one, this will soon no longer be the case. “Due to technical issues with the release of Helldivers 2, we have temporarily enabled the optional linking of a Steam account to a PlayStation Network account,” reads the announcement on Steam. This rule will start to apply to new players on May 6th, existing players will be notified of it from the end of the month, after which they will also have to have linked accounts from June 4th.
Sony explains this obligation by saying that account linking plays a critical role in “protecting players and maintaining the values of safety and security in games on PlayStation and from PlayStation Studios.” Thus, they will have more control over players who cheat or engage in inappropriate behavior in the games, which they can ban. On the other hand, players banned in this way have the right to appeal. At the same time, Sony is already directing players directly to the PlayStation website to create an account, reminding them that it’s free. “We understand that this may be uncomfortable for some of you, but this move will help us continue to build a community that we are all proud to be a part of,” Sony concludes, thanking you for your continued support of Helldivers 2.
With this decision, however, they lost the support of some players. This is proven by the posts under the announcement itself, the clown emoticons on it, but also by the sudden influx of negative reviews. In the reviews, there are mentions of fraud, betrayal or, thematically, also the disruption of democracy. Some write that a while ago they would have recommended the game to all ten, but now they can’t, others call it smart that this step comes after the fact, so they can no longer return the game after hundreds of hours and ask for money back. The Steam notification thread itself has already been locked with a total of 711 replies, but there’s no telling how Steam will deal with this review bombing, which it routinely responds to and regulates, after this avalanche of negative reviews.
In any case, it does not change the fact that a new warbond called Polar Patriots will arrive in the game on May 9th, and yesterday we also coincidentally wrote about the fact that the PC version has a great influence on the success of the game as such. On the other hand, linking to a PSN account in Ghost of Tsushima also brings trophies to PC, which others appreciate.
