The pitch for Helldivers 2 is fun, very heavily inspired by Starship Troopers, and ultimately, it’s an excellent thing. After a truly successful first part, which has established itself in the genre for years, the Arrowhead studio is back in action. Here is my opinion (mixed with that of my comrades) on Helldivers 2, and its dives that are as practical as they are fun.

Engage, in the third person
The relaxed and typical “old action movie” tone of Helldivers is literally thrown in your face from the first minutes. The very short tutorial will make you understand that you are the elite and that survival will depend on you, well you like hundreds and thousands of others. Propaganda delivered in a very amusing way which will follow us throughout the games.
Significantly, if the first Helldivers gave pride of place to the isometric view, here the developers have completely changed the point of view. Indeed, the emphasis is on the third person, and after several assumptions, the whole team was surprised for the better.
This new way of approaching the game takes us directly into the heat of the action. An enhanced feeling when using devastating weapons. I literally felt very small in front of the gigantic creatures.
Little important information, in Helldivers 2 you can play in first person, at least when aiming.
Play, progress, unlock
It must be said right away, Helldivers 2 is a service game. This will evolve over the months and years. There are items to buy with your money, but fortunately the developers have kept their heads on their shoulders.
By going to advocate democracy in the four corners of the galaxy, you will have no problem evolving. Moreover, progression items are only unlocked with medals that you will obtain by completing the objectives.

Small important point about the adventure, I strongly advise you to play with four people, with friends, or strangers. I tried several two-player games, and the game seemed way too unbalanced.
That’s not all, there is no player versus player mode here, and it is absolutely not in the plans for the rest of the game. If you are not interested in PvE, skip your path, but know that you will certainly regret it.
Spreading democracy is fun
Beyond the (boring) formalities, this is where Helldivers 2 excels. With your friends you choose your destination based on the difficulty you want to tackle, and from there, the magic begins. While loading, you are launched onto a planet with music that makes the “catapulting” simply epic.
You disembark, and then the serious things begin. Hopefully the area is quiet, but not for long. The objectives are numerous, of course, they are above all a pretext to land on these hundreds of regions to strike the enemy at the heart of his nests.
The battles are numerous and will increase in difficulty as you progress. For your part, you will also be able to gain power. A very exhilarating feeling that few games can transcribe. Communication is ultimately not the key to success, but rather your firepower.
Be careful though, friendly fire is completely open, which leaves, as you can imagine, room for rather funny situations. A poorly placed bombing will always end in bursts of laughter. After all, it is for democracy.
All these sensations that you will find in your games are increased tenfold when you play with strangers, who are of course looking to have fun and not spoil the defense of Super-Earth.
Stratagèmes, gameplay old school
A quick passage on the stratagems, which make me smile every time they use them. These are essential to your games, and you will even have to abuse them. To put it simply, they offer to bring a teammate back to life, make ammunition or heavy weapons fall from the sky, or even drop bombs. This host of assistance is unlocked on your ship (which also serves as a hub).
To activate them, it’s easy, it’s a series of directional keys to perform. A nice little touch for those nostalgic who experienced the good old days of “cheat” codes. Fun, and ultimately even more practical than a simple “wheel” of abilities.
Like combos in a fighting game, here the more you play, the more you will know by heart the combinations to perform. A big plus that can make the difference when you and your friends are surrounded.
Democracy, a great adventure
Helldivers 2 is truly beau. Apart from its truly varied landscapes, it contains atmospheres of its own. Plays of light which give it a realistic side, even on planets which do not resemble ours. Where it shines the most is with these weather effects where a storm can whip up in an instant.
Or simply the fog which will prevent you from seeing more than 50 meters. Not really practical for anticipating hordes of creatures. It is brilliantand each time we land in a new place, we wonder how the game will still manage to surprise us.
Music makes moments epic, even in loadings. It perfectly accompanies those moments when you feel like a super soldier without whom the world cannot turn.
Eradicate the threat
Far from the codes of the moment, going against the grain of certain fashions, and despite its “GAAS” approach, Helldivers 2 is the breath of fresh air of the moment. It’s fun, will make you laugh with friends, will offer you an excellent shooting sensation, a very good build-up, and this, without ever seeming to be heavy or redundant.
Be careful though, it is more of an experience that is played “between games”. It has its repetitive side which will make you tune out after several games in the same evening. But just like Palworld, it has that little taste of “come back to it”. In the morning you will get up with the desire to impose democracy with the rest of the world.
If you’re looking for a game to play with your friends, you can leave everything aside and run for Super-Earth. I would like to point out that this test was written with several people who fight for democracy on a daily basis.
