With evidence in hand, Michael Rivera showed the photos of what the thermostat had marked in recent days inside his small room.
“Here it shows 88 degrees, that’s how hot it was yesterday in my room. I have 3 fans, with this one I try to circulate the air, this other one I use to keep myself kind of cool while I sleep, hoping not to get dehydrated, and here I have one more,” Rivera explained.
Michael and his two cats are not the only ones affected, as the entire 19-story building with more than 100 units is without air conditioning.
The extreme heat wave of the last few days has been a real hell, and as we could see, on Monday the thermometer inside the units marked 84 degrees Fahrenheit. Nothing compared to previous days, which both during the day and at night, felt more than 90 degrees.
These high temperatures have endangered the people who live in the Indigo hotel, most of whom were displaced by last year’s storm Ida, and who were given shelter in a building by the NY Department of Housing Preservation and Development. private.
A 67-year-old woman who suffers from various health conditions also said she couldn’t stand the heat any longer.
“The problem I have is that with the heat my pressure goes up, so what I do is put myself on my head, face and all over my body with a towel soaked in ice water, but I still can’t sleep,” said the lady.
We spoke with the hotel manager, and off-camera she told us that a motor of the central air conditioning system for the entire building was damaged and that the part to repair it was already bought for 30 thousand dollars but that to date it has not arrived. They hope that soon, perhaps by Thursday of this week, they can already solve the problem, little consolation for those affected.
“The room is hot, about eighty, it’s very small in there, we don’t have AC, the lobby doesn’t have AC, the whole building doesn’t have AC,” said Antonia Rivera.
We understand that the property is owned by the Sheraton hotel across the street, where guests do have air conditioning. However, in this there is no despite the fact that they receive the money from the city.
