[OSEN=하수정 기자] ‘Hell’ Season 2 Kim Seong-cheol revealed an episode where he felt like ‘something big was going on’ after seeing his senior Moon Geun-young‘s arrowhead makeup.
On the morning of the 30th, an interview was conducted with Kim Seong-cheol, the lead actor of Season 2 of the Netflix original series ‘Hell’, at a cafe in Jongno-gu, Seoul.
Season 2 of ‘Hell’ is about a world that has become more and more confused due to the continuous notice of going to hell, and Sodo’s lawyer Min Hye-jin (played by Kim Hyeon-joo), Saejinrihoe, and the Arrowhead faction surround the suddenly revived Chairman Jeong Jin-soo (played by Kim Seong-cheol) and Park Jeong-ja (played by Kim Shin-rok). It depicts a story that unfolds with new entanglements. Director Yeon Sang-ho and writer Choi Gyu-seok returned with a more evolved story three years after season 1, which was released in 2021.
In particular, Kim Seong-cheol received attention as a relief pitcher in a crisis when Yoo Ah-in (played by Jeong Jin-soo), who was arrested on suspicion of drug use, left the show after season 1. He was brought in as a replacement starting from Season 2 and showed his own unique side, Jeong Jin-soo, who seemed to resemble Yoo Ah-in.
In Season 2, the original characters of Jeong Jin-soo, the first chairman of the revived Saejinrihoe, Park Jeong-ja, another reviver, and Min Hye-jin, the leader of Sodo, appear as before, as well as Lee Soo-kyung (Moon So-ri), the senior secretary for political affairs in the President’s Office who is trying to restore the balance of the world, and the key character of the arrowhead. New characters include Sunshine Class teacher Oh Ji-won (Moon Geun-young) and Cheon Se-hyeong (Im Seong-jae), Oh Ji-won’s husband and the first person to see the resurrected Jeong Jin-su.
‘Hell 2’ ranked first in the ‘Today’s Top 10 Series in Korea’ category and ranked 5th in the Netflix Global Top 10 Series (Non-English) category just 3 days after its release.
Kim Seong-cheol, who plays the resurrected character, was exposed naked in his first appearance, and put in a lot of effort to portray Jeong Jin-su, who came back from hell alive.
He said, “I felt a lot of pressure, and there was nothing I could do about it. Since I had to get rid of my redness, I thought I should work out my butt hard. (Laughs) Since I usually exercise a lot, I cut a lot. I lost all my muscles and a lot of weight,” he said. “I said I made it, but rather than just dieting and exercising, I tried to make my body as lean as possible.”
Kim Seong-cheol said he managed his diet for 5 months, saying, “At that time, almost every time I woke up, I would go out and run. Regardless of whether I had a schedule or not, I would always do fasting cardio in the morning and follow my schedule. I continued to manage my diet. But I almost never did it on set.” “When I was acting as Jeong Jin-soo, I didn’t have much of a desire to eat, so dieting wasn’t that difficult,” he said.
He continued, “Actually, I hated being exposed and was embarrassed. (Laughs) That was even the first still from ‘Hell 2’. ‘I’m in big trouble! What should I do!’ Other than that still, nothing else has been released for 6 months, and I thought, ‘Is there no such thing as Jeong Jin-soo?’ I was wondering if there was any need to wear clothes. (Laughs) It was an inevitable choice because the scene of Jin-soo Jeong’s resurrection was an important part of Season 2, but I didn’t have much of a choice.”
Kim Seong-cheol was inspired by seeing many seniors while filming, but was most surprised by Moon Geun-young’s arrowhead makeup. He said, “When I saw that, I thought, ‘I’m in big trouble. I need to act really well.’ I felt like I had to lose more weight and look devastated because I had nothing to show visually by wearing only a hoodie.” He added, “And Hyunjoo sunbaenim’s first action When I went out to play and saw that, I thought, ‘I’m screwed.’ I went there once when Moon So-ri was filming, and he said, ‘I’m in big trouble.’ He confessed it and made me laugh again.
Meanwhile, Season 2 of ‘Hell’ was released in over 190 countries around the world through Netflix on the 25th.
