“Helicopter crash in California kills Nigerian bank CEO and family, investigation underway”

Tragedy Strikes as Helicopter Crash Claims Lives of Nigerian Bank CEO and Family

In a devastating incident that has shocked the world, a helicopter crash in California has resulted in the deaths of six individuals, including the CEO of a prominent Nigerian bank, his family, and two pilots. The aircraft, identified as an Airbus EC130, was en route from Palm Springs, California to Boulder City, Nevada, just outside of Las Vegas, where the highly anticipated Super Bowl was scheduled to take place on Sunday. Unfortunately, tragedy struck when the helicopter crashed near Baker, California at approximately 10 pm.

Eyewitnesses at the scene reported seeing flames emanating from the aircraft shortly after it made contact with the desert terrain near Interstate 15 in Halloran Springs, California. The San Bernadino County Sheriff’s Department swiftly responded to the incident, but unfortunately, there were no survivors. The victims have been identified as Herbert Wigwe, the CEO of Access Holdings, his wife Chizoba Wigwe, their son Chizi Wigwe, and Abimbola Ogunbanjo, former group chairman of the Nigerian Exchange Group Plc.

The devastating news was confirmed by Nigerian President Bold Ahmed Tinbu, who expressed his profound sadness and sent his heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased. President Tinbu described the incident as an “overwhelming tragedy that is shocking beyond comprehension” and offered prayers for the peaceful repose of those who lost their lives.

Michael Graham, a board member of the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), provided preliminary details regarding the crash during a news conference held on Saturday. According to Graham, the helicopter had departed California around 8:45 pm and unfortunately there were no survivors. The helicopter involved in the crash was owned by Orbic Air, a Burbank-based tour company. It is believed that the helicopter had been rented from this company.

Graham further revealed that weather conditions at the time of the accident indicated the presence of rain and a “wintery mix.” As part of the investigation, officials will be on-site over the weekend to collect perishable evidence. While a preliminary report is expected to be released in a couple of weeks, a comprehensive investigation into the incident could take up to two years. During this time, authorities will meticulously examine various factors such as the aircraft’s airworthiness, maintenance records, flight operations, meteorological conditions, and air traffic control protocols.

Offering his condolences, Graham stated, “I’d like to express our deepest sympathies to the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives in this terrible tragedy.” The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has also initiated an investigation into the incident.

In a separate report by CNN, it was noted that more than 1,000 private jets are expected to fly into the Las Vegas area for the highly anticipated Super Bowl, which is set to take place at Allegiant Stadium. The tragic helicopter crash serves as a stark reminder of the risks involved in aviation, highlighting the importance of thorough investigations and heightened safety measures within the industry.

As the world mourns the loss of these individuals and the investigation into this tragic incident commences, it is crucial that we reflect on the fragility of life and cherish our loved ones. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families affected by this unimaginable tragedy. May they find solace and strength during this difficult time.
