Heleen van Royen about her psychosis: ‘Went wrong with breastfeeding’

It has been a long time since the writer had her last psychosis. “That has not been the case after the birth of my daughter. Then I was really forced to admit it.”

‘Farm of Thirst’

It also comes down to Van Royen’s youth. “There was too much going on to let it be unconcerned,” she says. “Bad marriage between my parents. And my father’s suicide, when you’re thirteen years old, that’s not going well. And that there is always a tension at home, that is not carefree and cozy.”

Van Royen was angry with her father, and decided not to go to to go to the funeral. She never went to his grave. But the moment her mother died, she buried her parents together under one rock. “Then I caught up with him, and said sorry I wasn’t at his funeral.”

Tamponfoto

At the campfire, Van Royen, Van Dorst and other guest Stefano Keizers talk about shame, or the lack of it. Van Royen tells again about the infamous ‘tampon photo’ that she took of herself years ago for her exhibition.

“One of the photos was a photo in which I pulled a bloodied tampon from my vagina, which I thought was quite charming. That brought about a lot,” says the writer. “I thought it was so logical to do that, also because you never see it. I wasn’t ashamed, and that’s exactly what people struggle with. They find that weird, dirty, threatening, scary.”
