Heinrich Himmer remains education director in Vienna

With the end of the red-green coalition, a new appointment was discussed. There is now an agreement between the City Hall and the Ministry of Education: Himmer stays

Heinrich Himmer (42) remains Education Director for Vienna. The business educator has been appointed by Minister of Education Heinz Faßmann (ÖVP) at the suggestion of Vienna Mayor Michael Ludwig (SPÖ) for a further five years to the end of 2025 as head of the Vienna school authorities.

Himmer has been at the helm of the Vienna school authorities since 2017 – first as the city school council president and after the change to the education directorate in 2018 as education director. Before that, he worked as a teacher in commercial schools and polytechnic schools and was active in the teachers’ union and in the Social Democratic Union (FSG) group.

“I have worked very constructively with Heinrich Himmer over the past few years, especially during the corona pandemic,” emphasized Faßmann. “He has proven that he can cope well with crises like the corona pandemic and the terrible terrorist attack in Vienna.”

Hybrid of federal and state

The education directorates, which were created in 2018/19 instead of the state school councils, organize the entire school administration in the respective federal state as a kind of hybrid authority from the federal and state levels. Its nine directors are proposed by the respective state governors after a hearing, and they are in turn appointed by the Ministry of Education. In terms of party politics, despite the application process, they are colored according to the respective state government.
