Heine Totland: – Tells about the nightmare

18 years ago experienced “Farmen celebrity” participant and musician Heine Totland (51) many’s biggest nightmare when he and his family were caught in the middle of the tsunami that took place in Thailand.

The 51-year-old has told about the frightening experience before, but he has never told the whole story. He is now doing this in an interview with See and listen.

Had to swim for life

Together with his wife Silje Nergaard (55), the musician has children Erle (24) and Karla (18). The family of four was on holiday with other family members in 2004.

At one point, Totland was left with the two children, who were then seven and a half years old. At the same time, he looked after his nine-year-old niece Hannah, and his seven-year-old nephew Birk.

When the tsunami came, he had to choose which of the children to choose. Totland therefore asked the oldest children to swim for his life, while he took care of Karla.

– I had to take care of Karla, because the others could swim. We have been concerned with teaching them to swim from the age of four, Heine explains in the See and Hear interview.

Saved the daughter

Father and daughter operated with the power, while the former held a firm grip on the little girl.

– Stomach to stomach, we were washed inwards. We went to the bottom, got a sunbed in our heads, everything was chaotic, he tells frankly about the drama, and explains that while he was with his youngest daughter, he did not know where the other three children were.

Everyone survived the tsunami disaster.

– Had to fight for my life

Totland’s wife, Silje Nergaard, have previously also told about the nightmarewhich took place while the family was on holiday on the paradise island of Ko Lanta.

At first she did not understand what was about to happen. Together with her sister, she walked along the beach, and they saw several fish lying and bouncing in the sand. Suddenly the wave hit them and Nergaard managed to cling to a palm tree while everything around her was laid in ruins.

– I remember I thought the thought: I have to fight now. I have to fight for my life, she has told Dagbladet.

Reunited with the family

When she and her sister after a while dared to swim into the hotel, they discovered that it looked like the scenes of a horror movie.

– They came out, in a row, my husband and a number of Thais. I remember it very well. They carried our children, who hung completely relaxed over their shoulders. Heine and the children had had their different fights in the waves and been scattered, but he managed to lock her in his grip, the three found each other again and survived, she said.

She pointed out that although their family was lucky, it was not like that for everyone.

– The tsunami is a memory that will always be there, but I have a distance to it. I no longer remember the feeling of fear of death. Not now. You will quickly return to where the days go by again, she said.
