Hein van der Loo has been nominated by the city council of Almere as the new mayor. The 51-year-old Van der Loo, now mayor of Zwijndrecht, takes over from D66 member Franc Weerwind, who has been Minister for Legal Protection since the beginning of last year.

CDA member Ank Bijleveld was acting mayor in Almere last year. Van der Loo was also from the CDA, but he has been partyless for some time. “During the office I discovered that I really want to be party independent,” he says. “I want to be neutral in order to fill the office as independently as possible.”

Van der Loo has been mayor of Zwijndrecht since June 2019. In the past, he was an independent consultant, interim manager and manager at Rabobank and ABN Amro. A total of 22 people had responded to the mayor’s post in Almere.

The Council of Ministers and King Willem-Alexander still have to approve the nomination. Van der Loo is expected to be installed in March.
