The debt enforcement office of the Arbon district has announced the auction of a farmer’s properties in Hefenhofen. This gained national fame in 2017 because of an animal welfare case. At that time, the authorities ordered an eviction and transported, among other things, 90 horses.
In addition to the farm in Hefenhofen, twelve other properties in Salmsach, Uttwil, Romanshorn and Amriswil will go under the hammer, according to the Thurgau Office for Debt Collection and Bankruptcy. The reason for the auctions are open debts of the owner.
According to the announcement, the debt enforcement office estimates the value of the land at CHF 2.05 million. The auction will take place on December 5, 2023 in Frauenfeld, provided the farmer concerned has not settled his debts by then.
The farm was evicted six years ago
The farmer from Hefenhofen had been in dispute with the authorities for years. His animal husbandry had been repeatedly criticized. From mid-July 2017, photos of neglected animals taken by animal rights activists were circulating in the media. On August 7, 2017, the courtyard was evicted.
In March 2023, he stood before the Arbon District Court because of multiple animal cruelty, among other things. However, this acquitted the former horse breeder of numerous allegations. Most of the “evidence” removed by the authorities, with which the public prosecutor wanted to put the previously convicted animal abuser behind bars for more than six years, was not usable, the verdict said. The public prosecutor’s office appealed against this.
