BENNEKOM – The death of 20-year-old korfball player Stephan van den Hul hit Bennekom like a bomb. The young athlete died during a practice match. Many people formed a guard of honor on Friday to pay tribute to Stephan.

That happened after the church service. Since not everyone could be present at the service, it was also broadcast on the internet. People were standing on both sides of the road at the beginning of the Achterstraat in Bennekom. From the grounds of the korfball club to the Molenstraat, people paid tribute. Then fifty torches were lit as a final goodbye.

Suddenly unwell
The 20-year-old Stephan suddenly became unwell during an exhibition game. Immediately bystanders came to the rescue, including the referee. Later, a trauma helicopter arrived at the sports field, as well as an ambulance and police and fire brigade. But also the resuscitation by the medical staff was of no avail.

A lot of audience was present at the exhibition game. Among them were many young people who were very upset. Victim Support was therefore called in for them. The club also organized a moment to talk about Stephan’s death. Mayor René Verhulst paid a visit and expressed his condolences to the relatives and team members of Stephan van den Hul.

According to DVO, Stephan never had any complaints before. He has played sports all his life at the korfball club in Bennekom.
