The artistic work of the Hedda Roman duo deals with the challenges of AI models in their deep involvement with the reality of human life. They examine how contemporary technologies can both challenge and reinforce entrenched notions of identity and truth. Against a backdrop of increasing reactionary essentialism—in which nuances and shades of gray are becoming less and less tolerable—they are using tools, including generative AI, to challenge dominant, profit-driven structures, such as the autoregressive scaling laws that dominate much AI research to criticize and question.
Hedda Romanthat is the artist duo Hedda Schattanik and Roman Szczesny. They live in Düsseldorf, where Hedda Schattanik studied as a master student with Andreas Gursky and Roman Szczesny studied as a master student with Marcel Odenbach.
In their work they combine film, literature, drama, opera, sculpture, photography and drawing with image-generating processes of artificial intelligence. They create immersive video installations and computer-generated images. With their work they strive to expand artistic expression and at the same time explore human cognition, their perceptions, their thinking, their emotions, contradictions and deep layers. They have already presented their work in numerous national and international exhibitions.
