Hector missed the podium – Shiffrin closing in on Stenmark

After the first race of the giant slalom World Cup, Sara Hector was aiming for a place on the podium. The Swede finished fifth, 23 cents behind third-placed Tessa Worley and another cent up to second-placed Petra Vlhova.

But this was not Sara Hector’s day.

The Swede didn’t make it to his second moto and had nothing to do with the podium and ended up eighth, more than a second off the podium.

American Mikaela Shiffrin he had a lead of 72 cents going into the second race. His second run wasn’t perfect, but the distance was enough. Shiffrin secured victory 13 cents ahead of runners-up Vlhova. Marta Bassino, Italy, third.

It was Shiffrin’s 78th career World Cup victory. In doing so, he comes close to Ingemar Stenmark’s record list of 86 pieces. Lindsey Vonn has 82 and is therefore the best among women.

Sara Hector has achieved two giant slalom podium finishes this season, but is still waiting for her first victory of the season.

Of five Swedish skiers Hector was the only one to advance to the second round. Estelle Alphand’s race ended already at the seventh gate when she straddled and suffered a serious crash.

Tomorrow, Wednesday, Hector and the other riders will have another chance in the same discipline in Semmering.
