Heavy Snowfalls Expected in the Alps: Up to 90cm Accumulation Forecasted

New snowfalls arriving in the Alps

Another heavy load of SNOW will arrive in our mountains over the weekend, with up to 90 cm of accumulation in some ski resorts!

Starting from the evening-night of Saturday 9 March a disturbance will bring a lot of rain to Italy with snowfall in the Alps with flakes starting from 700/800 meters above sea level, especially in Piedmont, Valle d’Aosta, Lombardy, rapidly extending then to all the Dolomites.

The wave of bad weather will then continue on Sunday 10th: a second unstable front will reach our country causing real storms in the Alps; by the evening, accumulations of up to 90 cm are expected in places such as Sestriere (TO), Alagna Valsesia (VC), Val Formazza (VB), Breuil Cervinia (AO) and Madesimo (SO). A lot of snow also in the Dolomites: in Madonna di Campiglio (TN) up to 50 cm is expected as well as on the ski slopes of Cortina d’Ampezzo (BL). On the Apennines, however, the snow level will be around 1600/1700 meters due to the mild call of the winds from the southern quadrants. Snowfall expected on Sunday 10 March But why is it snowing so much? These intense snowfalls are caused by the large amount of humidity present in the lower layers of the atmosphere due to greater evaporation of the seas due to ongoing climate change (greater heat = increased evaporation = increase in extreme weather events). Such exaggerated accumulations have never been recorded in such a short time in the Alps: in fact, this is record rainfall.

AVALANCHE DANGER – The heavy blanket of snow that has fallen recently has further weighed down the existing surface, exponentially increasing the risk of avalanches and avalanches.
It is therefore recommended to consult the avalanche bulletin by clicking WHO: the advice is to AVOID all activities (excursions, snowshoeing, ice waterfalls, snowy canals) outside the ski slopes, especially above 1700-1800 meters above sea level, where the danger is very high indeed.
