Heavy snow at Norwegian holiday favourite

Last week, Dagbladet mentioned the heavy snow in Morocco. In the south-eastern part of the country, a total of 2.2 meters fell in February.

The snowfall and cold affected a total of 24,000 families in three provinces, and there was a great need for humanitarian aid.

It is the first time in 50 years that such heavy snowfall has been recorded in the African country.

Now a blizzard named “Juliette” has hit the sunny Spanish island of Mallorca.

Subzero temperatures and snow

The holiday paradise known to many for its beaches and good bathing temperatures in the summer, on 1 March is covered in up to 50 centimeters of snow in several areas.

The temperature has also dropped as low as two degrees below zero in the mountain town of Valldemossa, which is located in the Sierra de Tramontana region.

The Spanish authorities have issued a red warning for the second day in a row, as another 38 centimeters of snow is expected to fall, write Sky News.

The storm also brings strong winds. Over 3,000 people are without electricity, according to the Spanish media Majorca Daily Bulletin.

The waves on the north side of the island must have measured as much as eight metres.

Weather experts have warned that up to 40 centimeters of snow could accumulate at the top of the island’s Serra de Tramuntana mountain range.

More danger alerts

The Spanish meteorologists have issued several danger warnings for rain. Among other things, they expect up to 100 millimeters of rainfall over large parts of the island in the coming days, write Daily Mail.

Storm “Juliette” hit the Spanish mainland on Monday, and is expected to wreak havoc in the area until Thursday. According to Sky News, temperatures in central mainland Spain have dropped to minus 15.8 degrees.

Other countries in Europe, such as Croatia and Serbia, have also felt some of the wrath of the storm throughout the week.
