Heavy rainfall is causing problems for farmers

Due to the heavy rainfall, the KNMI has issued a yellow code for the provinces of Overijssel and Gelderland.

Locally, around 50 millimeters has already fallen in Overijssel. Normally there is about 68 millimeters in the province in the whole month of June, writes RTV East. The most rain has fallen in Meddo so far (more than 51 millimeters) in the Achterhoek.

In most places it will continue to rain heavily for a few hours. Dry periods will follow from the south later this afternoon.

Crops

Farmers in the east of the country are struggling with the heavy rainfall. “You have to drain the excess water, otherwise you can’t do anything with your land. Then your crops will die because they drown,” says Bram de Vos from Lemelerveld.

In order to drain the water – and use it again during a drought – dozens of dry test troughs have been placed in the area. That is a metal frame with wooden planks that is placed in the water. The shelves can be adjusted depending on the desired groundwater level.

“It can be carried out on a small scale and you have the same result. In this way we try to connect the wet time with the dry time,” LTO director Harold Zoet told RTV Oost. He emphasizes that the weirs alone are not enough and more measures are needed.

Flower bulbs under water

Farmers in other parts of the country have also been affected by the heavy rainfall in recent days. “It is a drama, there is no saving,” Willem Valkering tells NH News. The flower bulbs on his land near Egmond aan den Hoef are completely under water.

Since Friday he and his brother have been working day and night to get the water away. It seemed to be going well for a while but last night it rained again. “I now have a lost feeling and see it very gloomy,” says Valkering.

The water board Hoogheemraadschap Hollands Noorderkwartier deployed at least twenty emergency pumps last weekend, but that turned out not to be enough.

Emergency pumps again

Also today there is a lot of rain in North Holland. The water board is once again deploying emergency pumps. It is expected that the emergency pumps and the full capacity of the pumping stations will be sufficient to prevent new flooding in the Noord-Holland polders.

Farmers’ interest organization LTO, North division, is critical of the water board. “They could have anticipated it better, they could have emptied the ditches a little earlier,” says driver Martijn van den Berg. the situation last weekend.

According to the water board, this amount of rain was unpredictable and they did everything within their power.
