Heavy Rainfall in Frisian Reservoir and Polders Causing Rising Water Levels and Nuisance: Wetterskip Fryslân Taking Measures to Prevent Problems

Wed January 3, 2024, 2:25 PM

LEEUWARDEN – Due to the heavy rainfall in recent days, the water level in the Frisian reservoir and polders has risen considerably. The high water is increasingly causing nuisance.

Wetterskip Fryslân says that it is working hard to prevent problems. “We use sandbags and pumps locally to prevent problems and store as much water as possible in polders. In all measures to be taken, the priority is to protect homes and commercial buildings.”

Bosom level is still rising

In the Frisian basin – the connected system of lakes, canals and canals in the province – the average water level was 35 centimeters below NAP this Wednesday morning. That is a lot higher than the target level of 52 centimeters -NAP.

“The water level is expected to rise further until Saturday, despite our efforts to drain as much water as possible to the IJsselmeer and the Wadden Sea. New precipitation is expected for Friday and the soil is saturated with water.” according to the Wetterskip.

Limited drainage options

Due to the high water level in the Wadden Sea, the options for draining via the Lauwersmeer are still very limited until Thursday afternoon. The pumping stations along the coast, including the Woudagemaal in Lemmer, are running at full speed to pump out water.

Water storage in polders

“To relieve the pressure on the reservoir, we store as much water as possible in the polders in our management area. This means that the water levels here will be raised to the maximum in the coming days. Here and there, parts of meadows will be temporarily flooded.”

A decision will be made on Thursday about the use of the 14 retention polders that Wetterskip Fryslân has in reserve. A maximum of 6 million cubic meters of water can be temporarily stored here.

Woudagemaal open until Friday

Members of the public who want to visit the rotating Woudagemaal are welcome here until Friday, between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. All tickets for today and Thursday are sold out. Tickets for Friday can be reserved via the ticket system.
