Heavy Rain Turns Burning Man Festival into Mud Bath, Urges Visitors to Conserve Resources

Visitors to the Burning Man festival have been urged to conserve food and water after heavy rain turned the venue into a mud bath, the BBC reports.

The weather has been so bad that access to the event in the US state of Nevada has been suspended, organizers said in a statement.

US media reported that more than 70,000 people were stranded there on Saturday.

The annual festival, held in the Black Rock Desert, is one of the most well-known cultural events in America.

Footage posted on social media shows visitors struggling to navigate the muddy conditions this year.

The organizers have announced that until the surface of the venue dries, no driving is allowed, except for emergency services.

“Participants are encouraged to save food, water and fuel, and to take shelter in warm, safe places,” the statement added.

This year the festival takes place from August 27 to September 4. However, a festival participant told the BBC that most of the events have been cancelled. Anatoly, who did not want to give his last name, is participating in the festival with his daughter for the second year in a row. He said that they had prepared for dust storms, but instead they were met with heavy rain. “Everything is fine with everyone, but there is a certain aspect of uncertainty,” said Anatoly. The tents of some people have been flooded, but the portable toilets are said to be unusable because they cannot be emptied due to the weather.

On the other hand, another visitor to the festival, Sherwin Natal, said that despite the muddy conditions, “the party is still going on, everything is going on as usual”.

“There have been worse conditions than this, everyone helps each other, that’s what Burning Man is all about,” he added.

The “Burning Man” festival in the Black Rock desert was held for the first time in 1990.
