Heavy rain tears away Mississippi road

Lucedale. Heavy rain washed away parts of an expressway in the US state of Mississippi – at least two people were killed. The underwash is likely a consequence of the storm “Ida”, said Cal Robertson of Highway Patrol, the CNN broadcaster early Tuesday morning (local time). According to the authorities, the accident happened on Highway 26 near the city of Lucedale. Ten people were injured, three of them seriously.

The pictures showed that the road had completely broken away. Vehicles were lifted out of a huge hole with heavy equipment. Highway 26 is a major artery between Mississippi and the southern state of Louisiana. The emergency call was received shortly after 10 p.m. on Monday evening (local time), said John Glass, head of emergency management for George County, the local broadcaster WLOX.

Hurricane “Ida” wreaked havoc in Louisiana. So far, two deaths have been reported there as a result of the storm – but it is feared that this number will increase. In the meantime, “Ida” has weakened to a tropical storm and reached the neighboring state of Mississippi.
