Almost one in five women suffers from menorrhagia, also called hypermenorrhea. The periods are considered abundant when they last more than seven days or when their quantity exceeds 80 milliliters per day (or about five tampons or five menstrual cups), specify the Hospices Civils de Lyon at the initiative of the project.
Multiple causes
The causes of this disorder, with significant repercussions on a daily basis for the women concerned, can be multiple (benign lesions, endometriosis, taking a drug, hormonal imbalance, etc.). Often fragmented between several hospital departments, follow-up can be difficult or discourage patients. Hence the idea of a day hospital to centralize care in one place. Women who go there will be able to benefit from an ultrasound or a complete biological assessment, all within a few hours.
Concretely, the HCL offer on their site a test to see if you have a heavy period or not. The patients concerned can be referred by their attending physician, their gynecologist or their midwife. This first in France should soon be followed by the opening of another similar structure at the Woman-Mother-Child Hospital in Bron, in 2022.
